Reference project

OncoFirm Cancer Biomarker Atlas: in preparation, contributors welcome

The Atlas is a planned reference on cancer biomarkers and the methods used to measure them. It is not yet published. We are inviting researchers and clinicians to contribute and review chapters.

Cover concept for the OncoFirm Cancer Biomarker Atlas, first edition

Why an atlas

Information on cancer biomarkers is scattered across journals, guidelines and vendor literature, and much of it does not say what a marker has actually been validated for. The Atlas aims to give one entry per biomarker with the same structure each time: what it is, where it is used, what the evidence supports, how it is measured and what its limits are.

For an introduction to the subject, see what cancer biomarkers are.

Planned structure

The scope below is a working outline and will change with contributor input.

Volume I: Foundations

Biomarker definitions, validation stages and how evidence is graded.

Volume II: Biomarker entries

One entry per marker, covering protein, genomic and circulating analytes.

Volume III: Cancer types

Markers organized by cancer, with their established and investigational uses.

Volume IV: Measurement technologies

Immunoassays, lateral flow, sequencing and other methods, with their trade-offs.

Volume V: Emerging directions

Multi-analyte panels, machine learning and point-of-care measurement.

Proposed editorial standards

Subject to the editorial group’s decisions, the intention is that:

  • Every entry cites primary literature or clinical guidelines.
  • Each entry names its author and reviewer, with affiliations.
  • Regulatory status and guideline recommendations are stated with dates.
  • Commercial interests, including OncoFirm’s, are disclosed.

Editorial lead and publication date to be announced.

How to take part

Researchers, clinicians, laboratorians and trainees can propose an entry, review a draft or join the editorial group. Use the collaboration inquiry form and mention the Atlas. Contributors are credited by name. The Atlas sits alongside our research priorities and our antigen research.
